"i was walking by a drycleaner at three am. and there was a sign that said 'sorry, we're closed.' you don't have to be sorry! it's three am and you're a drycleaner. it would be ridiculous for me to expect you to be open. i'm not gonna come by at ten and say, 'hey i was here at three am and you guys were closed. someone owes me an apology!'"
rest in peace, mitch all together. |

as a long-suffering eagles fan, i'm pretty ecstatic! i hope school's closed tomorrow. they do such an abysmal job plowing the roads in my development that i have zero idea what the roads are actually like. go birds! |

i know this page is usually a laugh a minute but if i could be serious for a moment (and i'll keep it editorial-free), please keep the thousands of victims of yesterday's earthquake and subsequent tidal waves in south asia in your thoughts. as of this writing, the death toll is up to just under 21,900 with hundreds of thousands injured and displaced, there could be one million new homeless. |

congratulations to 5000 and fairelady on their engagement! remember guys, if i'd never played that solo show at gradwell you never would have (re)met (i went into greater detail on the aod blog) ! well, at least not until the next show you both happened to be at.
last thursday apple of discord mark iv had its first rehearsal. aside from the fact that at 6'4 brian had to practically crawl his way into the basement, it went really well. we worked on a couple of new ideas. i hope this doesn't end up sounding like cursive. i was worried that it would take everyone a while to get comfortable but it came together pretty quickly. good thing my songwriting is so predictable.
i'm adamant about not playing out with this lineup. i could probably count the number of good shows apple of discord had in its last year of playing on one hand. in contrast, i'd need an excel spreadsheet to document the number of times we've been dicked over and had our good nature taken advantage of. i just want to write and record for the time being.
afterwards we (sans brian) went to the black horse diner for ostensibly the last time. to make a long story short, matt felt that his long time patronage was unappreciated. in the immortal words of big worm, 'it's the principality of the thing, smokey!' no big loss, i always thought that place was like the shop rite of diners - sticky floors, poor lighting, weird characters and odd smells. |

friday night monica and i went up to aaron and beth's new place (tripod site, pop-ups galore) to celebrate our friend the atom's first release, a reissue of clark's 'chicken and cashews'. it was a good time. there's some great tracks on the cd like 'peppercorn', 'subsonic sifter' and 'chinese firedrill'. if i can free up the webspace i'll post mp3s soon.
i was a little dismayed when steve ericson played a lot of songs, because i planned on only playing three or four. i ended up doing 'i was so sure', 'blowing out the sun' and 'rosalind, your tired heart', followed by unrehearsed numbers of 'do you remember the eclipse', clark's 'strange attractors' and finally ending with an impromptu version of elliott smith's 'pitseleh'. i only forgot the line 'the first time i saw you i knew it would never last / i'm not half of what i wish i was' - one of the best parts. sorry. earlier in the evening steve was telling us about hanging out with robert quine a week after smith's death (steve kept putting off sending quine a truckee cd week after week until it was too late), which led to us talking about es and his untimely and grisly demise. regrettably i don't have any richard hell covers in my repetoire so the es cover seemed like a good thing to do. at the time, anyway.
phil played a really sad solo song after me. imagine big phil sweetly singing the words 'i've wasted so much time on us' into a microphone; it's enough to break your heart. he said it was about george bush but i wasn't buying it. the night ended with the debut of sworple, which consists of phil on bass, kevin on guitar, aaron on guitar/computer and eric turtle on drums. phil and kevin write the songs. they played for about thirty minutes and they were really good. very noisy and poppy - phil and aaron sound really good singing together. |

while flipping through channels last night i stumbled across this part of a south park episode and ended up on the floor, nearly in tears from laughter:

maybe it helps if you're older. |
